There’s a car park. Look! But it’s packed!

I wonder if there’s a space! Oh, there, look! Let’s park there!

Yeah, okay. But remember to reverse into the space!

  —————————————

★I wonder =~

Remember to post this letter tomorrow morning

=Don’t forget this letter tomorrow morning.

 * “remember to do” =忘れずに~する” と

Remember to lock the door when you leave.

-Oh look! The bedroom window’s open. I don’t remember doing that.

Let’s learn something interesting!

————————————————————————-

Hello, everybody! Did you know that many English people tend to drive

straight into a parking-space”bonnet-first”?

         **

If you go to England, have a look round a few car parks!

I guarantee you’ll see lots of cars parked-from a Japanese perspective-”

the wrong way round”. I think it’s quite an amazing sight! But why do

Japanese people tend reverse into parking-spaces? I suppose they’re

thinking ahead to when they leave the car park, in that it’s easier to

pull out of a parking-space”bonnet-first”. I guess it’s connected with

cultural difference.

         **

By the way, in England, the part of the car that covers the engine is

called the “bonnet” while the back of the car is called the “boot”.

Whereas in America, the part that covers the engine is called the “hood”

while the back is called the “trunk”. Here in Japan, we’ve taken a sort

of “half-and half” approach and use “bonnet” and “trunk”. I wonder how

that came about?

————————————————————————-

★ ”The wrong way round”=

You’ve got the knives and forks the wrong way round.

The knives go on the right and the forks on the left.

Hello, everybody! Did you know that English houses haven’t got anything

like what we call a ‘genkan’?

         **

There are a lot of western-style houses in Japan but they’ve all definitely

got a ‘genkan’ as they conform to the Japanese custom. It seems to me

that quite a lot of Japanese people want to imitate western-style in many

areas.  However, they don’t seem to go in for the western-style of entrance.

         **

I always wonder about that. My conclusion is that although some Japanese

people are fond of western-style houses, the one thing they can’t accept

is the lack of a ‘genkan’.

I’m sure it’s because Japanese people don’t want to take their shoes off

when they’re already standing on the carpet! Having said that, some

English people do take off their shoes when they enter their houses!

Needless to say, they do that on the carpet, though!

I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the film.

It’s said to be common for children who had very light coloured hair

when they were babies to acquire darker hair as they get older. Nobody

pigment levels in the hair.

To be more specific, one theory is that, as pigment cells develop over

time, so they produce more pigment in a child’s hair, thus causing it

to darken. Light hair is basically hair that has a low pigment level.

It’s not unusual for babies with blonde hair to grow into darker-haired

children. In fact, some people have claimed that most blonde European

Hello, everybody!

Did you know that English people can’t sweat as efficiently as Japanese

people?

         **

Although there are 4 seasons in England, English summers are cooler

than Japanese summers. They’re also less humid than Japanese summers.

Because of that, English people who experience summer in Japan really

struggle with the heat! I think it’s difficult for their bodies to

adjust.

         **

Interestingly, it’s said that, before they come to Japan or just after

they arrive in Japan, it’s a good idea for them to have a sauna several

times so that their bodies can gradually acquire the ability to sweat

more efficiently. I suppose if they have a sauna, their pores can open

more.

Hello, everybody!

Have you ever eaten any British biscuits, sweets or cakes?

         **

There are some popular and well-known biscuits and cakes in Britain.

For example, shortbread, which contains a lot of butter and therefore

has a rich taste. It’s a traditional Scottish biscuit or cake.

Actually, it’s my favorite. And scones. If you eat them with double

cream and jam, I can assure you you’ll find them absolutely delicious!

And then there are crumpets. Their shape is round and they’ve got

little holes running through them. How you eat them is you toast them

and then spread some butter on them. The taste is quite distinctive.

         **

I think you should try eating them if you have the opportunity.

Teacakes are also nice. Again, you toast them and spread butter on

them. They contain candied peel and dried fruit. Normally, you have

them with tea.
