イギリス人ルーシーは日本に英語の講師として来ました。

ある休日、ルーシーは友達とドライブに行きました。そこで。。。

（レッスン　１８３）

ルーシー：見て！駐車場があるよ。でもいっぱいだね！

　　　　　空いている所あるかな！あーあそこ、見て！あそこに駐車しよう！

友達　　：うん、そうだね。でも、バックで駐車するのを忘れないでね！

ルーシー：（　）a（　）（　）. Look! But it’s（　）!

　　　　　I（　）if（　）a（　）! Oh, there, look! Let’s（　）there!

友達　　：Yeah, okay. But（　）（　）（　）into the（　）!

　　　　　　↓

ルーシー：There’s a car park. Look! But it’s packed!

　　　　　I wonder if there’s a space! Oh, there, look! Let’s park there!

友達　　：Yeah, okay. But remember to reverse into the space!

【解説】

★There’s（単数形）＝～があります

　”there’re～” は複数形になります

★car park＝駐車場

★packed＝混雑している、いっぱいである

★I wonder ＝～かしら、～だろうか

★space＝空間、空いている場所

★park＝駐車する

　＊名詞では “公園” という意味ですが、

　　動詞だと “駐車する” という意味になります。

★remember to ＝忘れずに～する

　＊ “remember to do” で忘れずに～するという意味になります。

　　反対語は “forget” になります。

　例－Remember to post this letter tomorrow morning

　　＝Don’t forget this letter tomorrow morning.

　　＝（明日の朝、この手紙を出すのを忘れないでね。）

　＊ “remember to do” ＝忘れずに～する” と

　　 “remember doing ＝～した事を覚えている” の違いを見てみましょう！

　例－Remember to lock the door when you leave.

　　－Oh look! The bedroom window’s open. I don’t remember doing that.

　　＝あ、見て！その寝室の窓は開いているよ。開けた覚えはないけどね。

みなさん、多くのイギリス人は、駐車するスペースに車を「ボンネット」から

とめるって知っていましたか？

イギリスに行ったら、幾つか駐車場を見てみて下さい！

日本人の目から見たら、たくさんの車が逆さまにとまっています。その景色は

驚きですよ。でもなんで日本人はバックで駐車しがちなのでしょうか？先に駐

車場から出る時の事を考えているからだと思います。その方が駐車場を出やす

いからです。それは文化の違いに関係があると思います。

ところで、イギリスではエンジンを覆っている部分を「ボンネット」と言いま

す。そして車の後ろの部分を「ブート」と言います。しかし、アメリカでは、

エンジンを覆っている部分を「フード」と言います。一方、後ろの部分は「ト

ランク」と言います。日本では、「ボンネット」と「トランク」を半々に使っ

ています。何ででしょう？

Hello, everybody! Did you know that many English people tend to drive

straight into a parking-space”bonnet-first”?

If you go to England, have a look round a few car parks!

I guarantee you’ll see lots of cars parked-from a Japanese perspective-”

the wrong way round”. I think it’s quite an amazing sight! But why do

Japanese people tend reverse into parking-spaces? I suppose they’re

thinking ahead to when they leave the car park, in that it’s easier to

pull out of a parking-space”bonnet-first”. I guess it’s connected with

cultural difference.

By the way, in England, the part of the car that covers the engine is

called the “bonnet” while the back of the car is called the “boot”.

Whereas in America, the part that covers the engine is called the “hood”

while the back is called the “trunk”. Here in Japan, we’ve taken a sort

of “half-and half” approach and use “bonnet” and “trunk”. I wonder how

that came about?

★　”The wrong way round”＝逆さま、逆向き

　例ーYou’ve got the knives and forks the wrong way round.

　　　The knives go on the right and the forks on the left.

　　＝ナイフ とフォークが逆だよ。ナイフは右でフォークは左に置くんだよ。
