同僚との会話です。。。

生徒　　：どっちの親に似てるの？あっ待って。

　　　　　当てさせて。。。お父さん？

ルーシー：そう、正解！どうしてわかったの？

　　　　　みんな私の目とお父さんの目が凄く似ているってあと、

　　　　　もちろん同じ色なんだ。

          Oh,（　）.（　）me（　）…Your father?

ルーシー：Yes, you’re（　）!（　）do you（　）（　）?

          People say my eyes and（　）are very（　）

生徒　　：Which parent do you take after?

          Oh, wait. Let me guess…Your father?

ルーシー：Yes, you’re right! How do you know that?

          People say my eyes and his are very similar

          and they’re the same colour, of course.

【解説】

★Which parent＝どっちの親

　＊“parents＝両親”“parent＝親（片方の親）”

★take after＝～に似ている

★Oh, wait＝あっ待って

★Let me guess…＝当てさせて。。。

★How do you know that?＝どうしてわかったの？

★His＝彼のもの

★Similar＝～に似ている

　＊“same”は “the” を前にもってこなくてはなりませんが、

    “similar”には必要ありません。

例ーJohn and Clare have similar interests.

　　＝ジョンとクレアは同じ趣味を持っています。

　　John and Clare have the same interests.

　　＝ジョンとクレアは同じ趣味を持っています。

★Colour＝色

　＊アメリカ英語ですと、スペルは‘color’になります。

　　日本でよく見るスペルはアメリカ英語の方だと思います。

★of course＝もちろん

みなさん、イギリス人が人の外見の特徴を言う時、普通、目の色も含むって

知っていましたか？

私達日本人は目の色は言わないので、変に感じると思います。この違いの理

由は結構わかりやすいと思います。UKではたくさん違う血統の人たちが住ん

でいるので、混血の人はたくさんいます。そのため、ブリティッシュにとって、

みんな違う色の目をしているという事は結構普通の事なんです。一方では、

今でも、高い比率で日本人は、日本人と結婚しているので、普通、日本人は

ダークブラウン色の目をしているのです。UKでは、目の色は特徴を見分けるん

です。例えば、警察が描く容疑者や行方不明者などにも使われます。

まとめると、カジュアルとフォーマルの状況両方で、人の外見の特徴を

言いたい時は目の色を言うんです。

Hello, everybody! Have you ever noticed that, when English people

describe　somebody, they normally include their eye colour?

　　　　　　　　　＊＊

It sounds odd to Japanese people as we don’t mention eye colour.

The reason for this difference is pretty straight forward,I think.

People of many different origins live in the UK so there are many

people of mixed parentage. Because of that, the fact that people

have different coloured eyes is quite normal for British people.

On the other hand, even now, a high percentage of Japanese people

get married to another Japanese person so they normally have dark

brown eyes. Eye colour is a distinguishing feature in the UK and

is mentioned, for example, in police descriptions of suspects

or missing people. To sum up, when you want to describe somebody,

you can mention eye colour in both casual and formal situations.
